Bohemian Rhapis-ody
Rhapis is considered one of the few “Japanese” palms, but it is actually a “naturalized” palm, with origins in China several centuries ago. However, it is believed that Japan originally introduced the rhapis palm to the west, as early as the Tokugawa era (1600s to mid-1800s). It is a great indoor plant because it thrives on neglect, and it is a great outdoor plant because it grows steadily (albeit slowly) and for most cultivars, doesn’t grow too big.
The rhapis is particularly popular in Japan. There is even a Rhapis Palm society that has been enjoying the cultivation and beauty of this palm since 1947. Like its Japanese cousin, the bonsai, rhapis in Japan are often raised in smaller containers as indoor plants, allowing the owner to minimize its overall size and enjoy it for a long, long time.
